An exhaust vent without matching intake does almost nothing. Here is a genuinely balanced look at the four main vent types and how they behave in Alberta weather.
Attic ventilation is one of those topics where every product has a fan claiming it is the best option, and homeowners end up picking based on whichever one they saw advertised most recently. The reality is more boring and more useful: no single vent type is universally correct, and which one you pick matters less than most people think, compared to whether the system as a whole is balanced.
Before comparing box vents, ridge vents, turbines, and powered fans, it helps to understand the one principle that governs all of them. Attic ventilation works on exhaust high and intake low. Hot, moist air needs to leave near the peak of the attic, and an equal or greater amount of fresh air needs to enter near the soffit, at the eave, to replace it. An exhaust vent installed without matching soffit intake does close to nothing, no matter how good the vent itself is, because there is nothing pulling air through it. Keep that principle in mind through the rest of this, because it matters more than which specific vent you choose.
Static Box Vents: Simple and Predictable
Box vents, sometimes called static vents or louvered vents, are the small square or rectangular caps you see scattered across a roof, usually placed a few feet down from the ridge. They have no moving parts. Air moves through them purely on natural convection, warm air rising and escaping through the opening, with no fan and nothing to power.
Their simplicity is the appeal. There is nothing to fail mechanically, no motor to burn out, and no wiring to inspect. The tradeoff is that they only exhaust the air directly beneath each individual vent, so a roof needs several of them spread across the attic to move meaningful volume, and the total exhaust capacity is limited compared to a continuous system. They work reasonably well on smaller, simpler attic layouts where a continuous ridge vent is not practical for the roof design.
Continuous Ridge Vent: Effective, But Only If Built Right
A ridge vent runs the full length of the roof’s peak, exhausting air continuously along that entire line instead of at a few scattered points. Done correctly, it is one of the more effective passive options, because it uses the whole ridge as the exhaust path and pairs naturally with continuous soffit intake running the full length of the eaves below.
The catch is in that phrase, done correctly. A ridge vent needs an actual continuous ridge, meaning enough unbroken length at the peak to install it properly, and it needs internal baffling that keeps wind-driven rain and snow from being pushed straight through the vent opening into the attic. A cheap or poorly baffled ridge vent installed in a Calgary winter can let fine, wind-driven snow in during a real blizzard. This is a detail worth asking about directly: what baffle design is being used, not just what brand of ridge vent.
Turbine Vents: Wind-Dependent, With a Real Alberta Catch
Turbine vents, the spinning metal roof turbines that turn with the wind, use that spin to actively pull air out faster than a static vent would on its own, at least while they are spinning. In steady wind, they can move a genuinely useful volume of air.
The catch is Alberta’s wind pattern itself. Turbines depend on consistent airflow to keep spinning, and Calgary’s Chinook winds, while frequent, are not always steady; they gust and stall. In very cold, still conditions, a turbine can also seize up if moisture freezes in the bearing, at which point it stops functioning as anything more than a static vent, or worse, becomes one more roof penetration with a moving part that eventually needs replacing. Turbines are not a bad choice, but treat the spinning motion as a bonus in good wind conditions, not a guarantee of performance in every season.
Powered Attic Fans: Why a Lot of Roofers Are Wary
Powered attic fans use an electric motor to actively pull air out of the attic, and on paper that sounds like the most effective option since it does not depend on wind or convection. In practice, a lot of roofers approach them cautiously.
A powered fan pulling air out faster than the soffit intake can supply it creates negative pressure, and that pressure does not always pull air only from outside. It can pull heated air up from the living space through a poorly sealed attic hatch, recessed lighting, or plumbing penetrations, straight into the attic and out the fan. That is the opposite of what you want: paying to heat air and then paying to exhaust it. Powered fans can work when soffit intake is sized generously and the attic floor is well air-sealed, but that is a specific combination, not a default assumption.
The Real Problem: Mixing Vent Types on One Roof
Here is a mistake that shows up more often than any single vent choice being wrong: mixing exhaust vent types on the same roof plane, most commonly a ridge vent combined with box vents or a powered fan still active nearby. It seems like it should add up to more ventilation. It usually does the opposite.
When you have both a ridge vent and a lower box vent or powered fan on the same attic space, air often takes the path of least resistance between the two exhaust points instead of pulling fresh air up from the soffit intake as designed. This is sometimes called short-circuiting the airflow, and it can leave large sections of the attic with almost no real air movement despite multiple vents installed. If your roof has a mix of vent types left over from past projects, that is worth a specific look, since capping the redundant one can improve airflow more than adding another vent ever would.
Snow Ingress: A Cold-Climate Problem Most Vent Marketing Ignores
Product marketing for roof vents is mostly written for climates that do not deal with genuine blizzard conditions, and it shows. In a real Calgary whiteout, with fine, wind-driven snow moving nearly horizontally, any vent opening without proper internal baffling can allow snow to blow directly into the attic. Once it is in there, it melts eventually, and that meltwater ends up on insulation or the attic floor.
This is less about which vent type you pick and more about the quality of the specific product’s internal baffle or louver design. A well-baffled ridge vent, a properly designed turbine, and a box vent with a good internal deflector all handle this reasonably. A cheap version of any of them may not. When comparing vent products, ask specifically about snow load and wind-driven precipitation ratings rather than assuming type alone determines performance.
How to Check Whether Your Soffit Intake Is Actually Open
None of the exhaust vents above matter if the intake side is blocked, and this is the single most common ventilation failure in Calgary attics, more common than any exhaust vent choice being wrong. Over the years, insulation gets added or blown in and often ends up piled against the soffit vents from the inside, sealing off the intake path without anyone noticing from outside.
- Check for daylight or airflow at soffit vent locations from inside the attic with a flashlight.
- Look for insulation piled against or over the eave edge where soffit vents sit.
- Confirm baffles, the rigid channels between rafters at the eave, are present and clear.
- Ask whether your exhaust vents were installed to match your soffit intake capacity.
- Flag any mixed vent types on the same roof plane for a second look at your next inspection.
If insulation is packed against that edge, intake is blocked no matter how good your exhaust vents are. Baffles, installed between the rafters before insulation goes in, keep this path clear permanently and are worth adding during any insulation upgrade if your home does not already have them.
Match the Vent to the Roof, Not the Marketing
There is no single correct vent type for every Calgary home. A simpler roof with a shorter ridge might do perfectly well with box vents and generous soffit intake. A larger, more continuous roofline is often a strong candidate for a well-baffled ridge vent. Turbines and powered fans both have a place, but each comes with a specific condition attached, wind reliability for one and intake sizing plus air sealing for the other, that needs to actually be checked rather than assumed.
